HISTORY
OF THE 5TH RANGER BATTALION RE-ENACTING SOCIETY
INC:
|
|
In 1998 after several years
of researching World War II, our CEO Tim Torey and
his wife Lisa, decided that too much attention was
being placed on the 2nd Ranger Battalion during the
Invasion of France, 6 June, 1944 and that other Ranger
units were being forgotten. This decision led them
to the in-depth study of all Ranger Battalions during
World War II. Tim's Grand farther had also served
in the Pacific with the 6th Ranger Battalion. With
some other periods of re-enacting under their belt;
and Lisa's past Civil War Living History experience,
they wanted to break into the WWII re-enacting hobby.
A love for history and a great way to educate everyday
people about the Rangers was the one dream they both
shared equally.
In the
late summer, early fall, 1998 they began to look seriously
at the world of WWII reenacting and met some wonderful
people along the way. By the winter of 1998, Tim had
teamed up with and met Andrew Burgess (Easy Co. 5th
Rangers Reenacted) of Michigan, and they began to
correspond and attend events together. Before they
knew it, they had several people interested in joining
up and reenacting the 5th Rangers. In the spring of
1999 they had teamed up with the ETO organization
to form B Company 5th Ranger Battalion re-enactors.
In the early spring of 2001, they met up with Mike
Owen; a newcomer to the hobby, and soon after numerous
other people joined. Focus was placed on recruitment
and authenticity above and beyond other units at that
time.
In 2001
it was decided that we wanted to become our own organization,
separate from any parent organization; and to be individuals
with set standards for authenticity and research.
At this time, Tim, Lisa, and other members began to
correspond with various veterans of the 5th Ranger
Battalion and learned more than they could ever have
hoped. By early 2002 we were well on our way to becoming
our own organization.
In July
of 2002, the groups name changed to the "5th
Ranger Infantry Battalion Re-enacted" and the
organization began to achieve individualized recognition,
separate from a parent society. Tim and Lisa transferred
to Maryland in 2002 with Tim being active duty in
the Army. In January 2003, Tim was sent to serve in
Iraq for 14 months. During this deployment, most of
the management functions of the organization fell
to Lisa, which she delegated to other members. Our
concentration was recruiting; membership and achieving
non profit status in the future.
When Tim
Torey returned from Iraq in March 2004, the unit had
achieved all we set out to do and more. We became
a fully incorporated non-profit educational organization
in August 2003. The 5th had become associated with
the WWII Ranger Battalions Association Sons &
Daughters. We achieved ongoing and continuous correspondence
with many 5th Ranger veterans.
In August
2004, the 5th had the opportunity to be invited and
attended the WWII Ranger Reunion in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
In 2005, a dramatic change took place, with a Doing-Business-As
(DBA) name for the organization: The 5th Ranger Infantry
Battalion (RS) Inc. DBA Military History Preservation
Association or MHPA. This was the first step to becoming
a multi-cultural, multi-impression organization.
Throughout
our existence, we have had members from multiple states
and currently have multiple company's formed of many
members here in the US. Some of our high-points included
attending the Ranger Veterans re-union, giving personal
classroom lectures and presentations to the public
by our members, and working with Flashback TV Inc
on filming segments for the successful History channel
program: "D-Day. The Lost Evidence".
We currently accept all
forms of WWII re-enactors and groups that portray
the Allied or Axis powers. We do expect those groups
to maintain our level of authenticity, and commitment
to education. The 5th Rangers/MHPA currently hold
an educational partnership with the WWII Ranger Battalions
Association Sons & Daughters to honor all service
members of WWII. We have an obligation to uphold the
determination of our founding fathers and veterans,
and to educate the public of the sacrifices made,
so that they are never forgotten or repeated.
