USE PHOTOS WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION.
The
5th Ranger Battalion at one of the Cigarette Camps in the
Le Havre area--Camp Lucky Strike; Janville France. Location
is also given as 5 miles Northeast of Cany-Barville. |
This
photo was taken of Company F, 5th Rangers also at Camp Lucky
Strike; location of the above Battalion photo. Note the
prominence of the 5th Ranger scrolls and Jump boots. Also,
rows of M1934 pyramidal tents can been seen the background. |

landings in Weymouth, England. 1) 1st Sgt. Sandy Martin
who was KIA on 6 June, 1944 2) T/5 Joseph J. Markowitz 3)
Cpl. John B. Loshiavo and 4) PFC Frank E. Lockwood |
Ranger
Thomas Herring, in a studio photo typical of the time. Note
convertible collar mustard wool shirt and OD t-shirt underneath. |
Ranger
Henry Glassman of Headquarters Company, 5th Ranger Battalion.
Photo taken in Germany; various Headquarters signs in background
at right. |
1st
Sgt. John C. Hodgson, left; of F Company and 1st Sgt. Joseph
A. Kennedy of E Company in Gotha, Germany. Taken in March
of 1945. Note the M1943 field jackets worn by men in the
background and the Ranger diamond on the shoulder of the
M41 of 1st Sgt. Hodgson; despite the late date in the war. |

PFC
Lewis "Dutch" Haight and Pvt. Raymond "Reble"
Norman of E Company 5th Rangers. The photo was taken
in Arlon, Belgium. PFC Haight was on a patrol with
his good friend Pvt. "Reble" Norman when
he was KIA.
PFC
Haight was awarded the Silver Star for actions he
took on behalf of Sgt. Zimmons during the Brest campaign:
"...On
31 August 1944, a patrol from Company E, 5th Ranger
Battalion, while returning from an important reconnaissance
mission was attacked by hostile enemy fire. One man
was seriously wounded. Pvt. Haight though exposed to
heavy small arms fire, without hesitating, unclothed
himself and used his own garments to bandage the wound
of his injured comrade. Then this soldier, with complete
disregard for personal safety, seized an automatic rifle
and fired into the hostile machine gun nest, drawing
fire upon himself thus diverting enemy firm from the
other men in the patrol evacuating the casualty. The
gallantry, disregard for personal safety and unswerving
loyalty to comrades-in-arms displayed by this enlisted
man is in keeping with the highest traditions of the
service."
|
PFC
Lewis J. "Dutch" Haight of Easy Company 5th Rangers
in an extremely RARE and seldom seen photo. He is wearing
an M1942 re-enforced Jumpsuit of the type worn by paratroopers
on D-Day. However, clearly visible on the left shoulder
is the Ranger diamond patch. The wear of the M1942 Jumpsuit
by Rangers is all but nonexistent; the exception being this
instance. By all means, Rangers in combat in the ETO did
not wear the M1942 jumpsuit; nor shall the 5th Rangers re-enacted.
UPDATE: In talking with Lewis Haight, Lisa
Torey asked about this rare photo and was told by Mr. Haight
that "The jacket was (taken quickly) by me while we
were stationed at Braunton assault training center prior
to D Day." |

Pvt.
Raymond "Reble" Norman of E Company 5th Rangers.
The photograph was taken in Arlon Belgium, this one of Pvt.
Norman before being KIA. |
Ranger
Jim Royle 24 June 1945 in France. Note jump boots, M3 trench/fighting
knife on right leg and the Ranger diamond still in use. Of
special notice is the M1916 leather 1911 pistol holster worn
on the reverse side for cross-draw; with the flap removed
for quick access. A WWI 1911 magazine pouch can be seen on
the pistol belt; and the Thompson SMG is the M1 model; (not
M1A1). The photo was taken in a studio; obvious from the backdrop. |
A
group of officers and enlisted men of Headquarters, Baker,
and Dog companies; 5th Rangers. The photo was taken in Mark
Grafing, Germany in 1945 at the end of the war. Note the
mix of M1943, M41 field jackets, and winter combat "tanker"
jackets among the soldiers of the battalion. Lt. Phil Thomas
can also been seen wearing Jump boots, the preferred footwear
of the 5th Rangers throughout the war. Ranger "sunoco"
diamond patch can still be seen in use; as with the above
